UPS sued by EEOC over beard incident
Asbury Park Press 03/31/06
United Parcel Service Inc., the world's largest package shipper, has been sued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which accused the company of religious bias for refusing to hire a Rastafarian because he had a beard.
UPS required Ronnis Mason to shave his beard for a job as a "driver helper," a position that involved customer contact and assisting with deliveries, the EEOC said.
Mason wears a beard as part of his observance of Rastafarianism,. He was seeking a job at a UPS package-sorting hub in Secaucus in November 2004, according to the EEOC.
